What the Google Algorithm Change Means For Your Local SEO Strategy

  • SEO

Google recently announced an update to their core algorithm. While the Google core algorithm is updated daily, “broad core algorithm updates,” happen only a few times a year. This recent update might have affected your search engine ranking and we wanted to fill you in on what that means.

Google has given a few clues on what we should expect with the most recent update.

The Update

Google recently made a statement on Twitter confirming the update and noted that certain websites might notice a change in rankings and appearance:

β€œEach day, Google usually releases one or more changes designed to improve our results. Some are focused around specific improvements. Some are broad changes. Last week, we released a broad core algorithm update. We do these routinely several times per year.

As with any update, some sites may note drops or gains. There’s nothing wrong with pages that may now perform less well. Instead, it’s that changes to our systems are benefiting pages that were previously under-rewarded.

There’s no β€œfix” for pages that may perform less well other than to remain focused on building great content. Over time, it may be that your content may rise relative to other pages.”

The most recent update is meant to improve search results and favor websites that provide specific answers to questions. While Google said that there is nothing wrong with the websites that lost rankings due to the update, there is always room for improvement. If you did notice a drop, there is work to be done. The drop could be due to your website layout, content, or website speed.

Google favors websites that are fast-loading, mobile-friendly, and answer questions that users seek. So if your website needs work in those areas, now is the time to start adapting. More of these types of updates are sure to come.

What You Can Do to Improve Your Search Engine Rankings

We know that Google said there isn’t a specific fix for the ranking changes due to the new algorithm change, but there are some things that you can do to improve the performance of your website over time.

Answer the Right Questions

Updating your content strategy can help reposition your website on search engine rankings. Search engine users often search in terms of questions, especially with the rising popularity of voice search.

β€œWhat is the best pizza place in Houston?”
β€œHey Google, where can I get my cowboy boots repaired in Houston?”
β€œHow do I do my own taxes as an Independent Contractor?”

Try to answer the questions your target audience is asking. Being the best available answer to each question your buyers have throughout their journey will help improve your web ranking.

Don’t Ignore the Technical Foundation Behind SEO

One thing that is often overlooked is the technical execution of SEO that lays the foundation for success. Most people rely heavily on their content strategy and forget to look into the technical aspect of SEO.

Crawl your website and make sure there isn’t anything preventing you from getting better rankings that could be an easy fix. That could be anything from needing to decrease the number of 404 pages to improving your site speed to refreshing your page titles and metadata.
